About us ...

Our mission is to push the boundaries of contemporary circus by creating high-quality and innovative performances. We embrace the visual language as a powerful tool to connect art, history, and our modern society. Our aim is to offer a unique cultural experience, with a strong focus on design and the integration of natural and recycled materials with artisanal craftsmanship and technology.

At Cirque Mecanique, we believe that circus art is not only about performances, but also about craftsmanship and artisanal skill. Our vision is rooted in the interplay between theatrical elements and the natural beauty of our planet. We strive to play a leading role in propelling the circus genre to new heights, with respect for the past and an eye for a modern twist.
Our identity is deeply rooted in the creative mind of Joris Janssens and his ability to harmoniously blend art, circus, craftsmanship, and nature. We are also committed to supporting and creating sets for other circus and theatre artists, and we aim to collaborate with fellow creators to bring their visions to life. Our mission is to move, inspire, and spark the imagination of audiences while revealing the beauty of the world and the magic of mechanics.
About the artistic director
A devoted circus enthusiast, Joris Janssens began his journey at the age of 15, juggling in his neighborhood. Over the years, his humble beginnings evolved into something much greater. He co-founded the circus school Ell Circo D'ell Fuego, where he spent two decades shaping his artistic vision and sharing his love for circus arts.
Joris's passion extended beyond performing; he also had a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship behind the scenes. Trained as a sculptor, welder, and craftsman, he not only created his own circus equipment — ranging from bascules to Chinese poles — but also contributed his skills to many other circus productions. He was frequently involved in the creation of sets and props, and his work consistently reflected both versatility and artistic vision.

During his journey, Joris shared his knowledge by teaching at renowned circus institutions such as Codarts in Rotterdam, the National Centre for Circus Arts in London, and Le Lido in Toulouse.
His modest workshops reached audiences worldwide and enriched the circus community with his expertise.
In addition to his circus skills, Joris completed a six-year blacksmithing course at the academy, further refining his craftsmanship and welding abilities.
Passionate about the fauna and flora of our planet, Joris often weaves this love into his creations. His deep connection with the natural world is reflected in his work, giving it a unique and organic character.
Joris describes himself as an old soul in a young body. The appeal of Jugendstil and Art Nouveau continually flows through his creations, though always with a contemporary twist.
In 2011, Joris founded De Machienerie, which allowed him to create and perform his own productions. During this time, he guided the artistic direction of Machienerie with his distinctive artistic vision and playful approach.
The year 2023 marked a new chapter for Joris, as he chose to continue his artistic legacy under the name Cirque Mecanique. His journey — from juggling teenager to founder of Ell Circo D'ell Fuego and De Machienerie — is a testament to his profound connection with the world of circus and his enduring impact on others.
